• Patty Belsen is the mother of Dakota, the Lostling who just returned. Patty is a devoutly religious woman who loves her daughter more than anything, but that love is warped by fear, the kind of fear that turns into obsession when it has nowhere else to go. She believes Dakota was taken because their faith wavered.

PATCH

• Patch is the funny, charismatic heart of the friend group. He is the rare hybrid of nerd and jock, a history buff and lacrosse star who never outgrew his weird, obsessive passions – like the Lord of the Rings books, which he quotes like scripture. He is also the group’s resident conspiracy theorist, the first one to jump to supernatural conclusions when it comes to the Lostlings.

• Red Flynn is Shadowbrook’s biggest mystery, someone everyone thinks they know, even though no one actually does. His name is passed around like a warning label, wrapped in rumors that he escaped Questhaven, lives alone in the woods, deals drugs, and might have even killed his own mother. To most people, Red is volatile, dangerous, and not worth getting close to.

JESSE

• Jesse is the All-American golden boy. He’s a loving boyfriend, loyal, genuinely kind, sweet and protective, especially when it comes to Grace. Jesse has grown up safe and protected, emotionally and financially. He represents stability, and envisions a picture-perfect future with Grace. But with his wealthy family and stable life in Shadowbrook, his path has always been paved.

ANDREW

• Andrew is a rookie cop eager to prove himself. When his younger brother Jesse becomes the latest Lostling, Andrew is forced to witness the town’s curse from inside the police department, expecting urgency and real investigation, only to discover the cops are flippant, numb, and disturbingly practiced at letting Lostlings vanish without a fight.

SHERIFF EDMAN

• Sheriff Edman is a jaded, complacent man whose years on the force have worn him down into complacency when it comes to the Lostlings. He represents everything that’s broken about Shadowbrook, a town so used to tragedy that even the man in charge of protecting it has stopped trying.

AUSTIN

• Austin is Shadowbrook’s golden-boy jerk, the captain of the lacrosse team who hides cruelty behind confidence and popularity. He’s arrogant, entitled, and relentlessly insensitive, the kind of guy who treats other people’s pain like entertainment, largely because he’s never had to develop real empathy.

CARL REYNOLDS

• Carl Reynolds is Jesse’s father, a practical man who has lived in Shadowbrook his entire life and therefore understands the grim reality of Jesse becoming the latest Lostling. He loves his son deeply, but he doesn’t let himself indulge in hope. He is loyal to his wife to a fault, eager to keep her happy and terrified of losing the life and status she’s built for them.
