• Working class. Exceptionally smart, observant, and quiet, Charlie views the world through a scientific, methodical lens. Driven by grief and a quiet desperation. Think River Phoenix in Stand By Me. He’ll be a handsome man when he grows up. He’s the emotional core of the group. Mild violence and mild profanity. There is a scene where they witness an adult character getting shot. Charlie says the words “sh*t” couple of times.

OSCAR “PICKLE” DELGADO

• Age: 11+ to play 12 years old
• Any Ethnicity
• Lead role
• Character-y look or super unique face, or a roly-poly vibe. Think a middle-school-aged Jonah Hill or McLovin’ in SUPERBAD for reference. Highly anxious, vocal, and constantly terrified of getting into trouble or breaking rules. Despite his neuroses and tendency to get seasick or faint at the sight of dead things, he is deeply loyal to his friends, plays the blues on an out-of-tune upright piano, and acts as the group’s dramatic moral conscience. Possibly shorter in stature and the only kid who anxiously wears a life jacket on the boat.

BENNY LUCAS

• Age: 11 to 14 years old
• White
• Lead role
• Ashkenazi Jewish. A natural born leader. Bold, adventurous, and enthusiastic about mischief, Benny is always ready to jump headfirst into Charlie’s wild ideas without needing much convincing. He brings high energy, humor, and swagger to the group, acting as the operational “hype man.” There is a scene where they witness an adult character getting shot. Role is in scenes when the words “sh*t” is said by another role.

WANDA “BIRD” KOWALSKI

• Female
• Age: 11 to 14 years old
• White or mixed ethnicity (half White / half Black)
• Lead role
• The daughter of the cemetery sexton, Bird is completely comfortable around graves, tools, and heavy lifting. She is stoic, highly capable, and protective of her friends—especially Charlie, whose emotional pain she sees right through. She serves as the grounded, practical anchor and Hermione Granger of the group. There is a scene where they witness an adult character getting shot. Role says the words “sh*t” a couple of times.
