CASTING FOR SHORT FILM A DAY IN MY LIFE

A Day in My Life

Ben is an Asian-American teenager with a physical disability and a deep passion for music. However, his traditionalist father has very different plans for his son’s life. When Chloe, Ben’s best friend, confronts him with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Ben must make a decision: appease his father and give up his passion, or pursue music—and his subsequent happiness—wholeheartedly.

Ben Hoang

Male
Age: 18-23 (appear 17-18)
Ethnicity: Vietnamese or half-Vietnamese

Ben is a high school-aged boy with a physical disability that requires him to use a cane. Music is his greatest love—a connection he has with his late mother, as well as the disability he inherited from her. While Ben is respectful and understanding of his father’s overbearing nature, he can’t so easily shunt his love of music to the side, despite his father’s wishes.

*Actors with disabilities are highly encouraged to audition. Ability to play piano is a plus, but not required.*

Binh Hoang

Male
Age: 40-55
Ethnicity: Vietnamese or half-Vietnamese

Binh is a successful engineer, grieving husband, and father to Ben. Not only is he very traditional in the way he parents Ben, but he’s also very protective over his son, especially in the wake of his wife’s death. While he loves his son more than anything and wants him to be successful, he disapproves of Ben’s wish to pursue music, believing it to be an ultimately unfulfilling path.

Chloe

Female
Age: 18-23 (appear 17-18)
Any Ethnicity (African-American, Latina, and Pacific Islander actors especially encouraged)

Chloe shares Ben’s passion of music, being a very talented singer herself. Music has always been an integral part of her life and upbringing, and she wants to see Ben flourish as a pianist. Due to their cultural differences, she has a hard time understanding why Ben is quick to bend to his father’s whim, but as his best friend, she offers him her unyielding support and encouragement.
